Abstract

Artificial intelligence tools are redefining how we carry out our daily tasks at our places of work, and the various fields of media practice are not left out. Based on this, this study examined the awareness and use of AI technologies among journalists in Owerri Municipal Council, Imo State, Nigeria. The study's objectives were to: examine the awareness of AI tools for media practice, assess knowledge of how to use media-related AI tools, and determine the usage of media-related AI tools for journalistic practices among journalists in Owerri Municipal Council. The Uses and Gratifications theory served as the theoretical foundation for the study. The survey research design was adopted for the research methodology. The census principle was used to select all 380 registered journalists in Owerri Municipal Council, with a purposive sampling technique applied to the 380 practising journalists within the council. The findings showed that the majority of journalists in Owerri, Imo State, are aware of artificial intelligence (AI) tools for media practice. However, the level of awareness was not commensurate with the knowledge of how to use AI tools. Further findings revealed that journalists in Owerri Municipal Council lack the knowledge of how to use media-related AI tools. It was also found that the majority of media companies and journalists in Owerri are not using AI tools in their regular work. The researchers concluded that most journalists in Owerri Municipal Council, Imo State, are not knowledgeable about how to deploy AI tools for media practice and recommend that journalists in Owerri Municipal Council acquire more skills in how to use media-related AI tools.
