Abstract

This study examined the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its ethical challenges in newsroom operations across media organisations in Kogi State, Nigeria. Using a quantitative survey research design, the study targeted 148 journalists registered with the Nigerian Union of Journalists in Kogi State, with a sample size of 108 determined through Krejcie and Morgan’s sample size table. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analysed using descriptive statistical tools, including frequencies and percentages. The findings reveal that AI adoption in newsrooms across media outlets in Kogi State is still in its early stages, with AI primarily used for editing tasks such as grammar checks, fact-checking, and combating misinformation. The study further revealed that ethical concerns associated with AI use in newsrooms—including the risk of bias, the threat to creativity, and privacy issues—are hindering its widespread adoption. The study concludes that while AI holds significant promise for the future of journalism in Kogi State, addressing ethical challenges is essential for its successful integration. The study recommends, among other things, that media organisations in Kogi State invest in AI training, adopt ethical frameworks, and ensure transparency, fairness, and privacy in AI usage.
