Pattern of Social Media Usage among Women in Enugu State

Abstract

This study investigated the social media usage pattern among women in Enugu State, Nigeria. Social media usage pattern was measured using variables like time of use, duration of use, the frequency of use as well as the purpose of use. The study examined the relationship between social media types and the use pattern based on these four variables. Survey research design was used for the study. The sample size was made up of 384 women from Enugu State selected through a cluster sampling technique. Questionnaire was the instrument of data collection. A total of five social media platforms were examined. They are: Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter. The relationships between usage patterns and the social media types were explored using the Chi-Square test of independence. The result of this study showed a significant relationship between the type of social media and the time of use, the duration of use, the frequency of use, time of use and purpose of use. The study recommends that communication campaigns targeting women should take into account the social media usage pattern of women in the state.
