Abstract

This study assessed the reputation management strategies of the Nigeria Police Force and protectees’ perceptions of these strategies in Taraba State, Nigeria. The study was anchored in Relationship Management Theory and adopted a mixed-methods approach, using a questionnaire and an interview guide to collect data from protectees and members of the Public Relations Unit of the Nigeria Police Force in Taraba State. The findings revealed that the major reputation management strategies employed by the Nigeria Police Force in the state were prompt handling of complaints, professional conduct and community relations. This suggests that the police prioritise professionalism and community-oriented approaches in managing their relationships with the public. The findings further indicated that the reputation management strategies implemented by the Nigeria Police Force were perceived as effective, having improved the public image of the police and strengthened public trust in the institution. The study concludes that, although the Nigeria Police Force is making deliberate efforts to manage its reputation, the misconduct of some officers continues to tarnish the image of the Force, thereby undermining these efforts. The study recommends that the Nigeria Police Force should strengthen officers’ training, promote transparency, improve communication and enforce discipline to enhance the effectiveness of its reputation management strategies.
